SHINE: electrifying high-temperature hydrogen heating
SHINE develops, installs and validates a 13.7 MW electric heater for hydrogen-rich process gas, targeting industrial operation up to 1000°C and a transition from TRL 6 to TRL 8.
Industrial-scale electric heater demonstrator.
Target process-gas outlet temperature for hydrogen-rich streams.
Target maturity after validation in an industrial steelmaking environment.
Why SHINE matters
Hydrogen-based direct reduction can deeply reduce steelmaking emissions, but the reducing gas must be heated to very high temperatures. SHINE addresses this bottleneck through high-efficiency electric resistance heating designed for industrial scale and continuous operation.
The project combines pilot testing, multiphysics modelling, refractory development, industrial design and commissioning, a Digital Twin, techno-economic and environmental assessment, exploitation, standardisation, training and dissemination.
