Project overview
SHINE scales electric hydrogen-rich gas heating from a 0.5 MW pilot basis to a 13.7 MW industrial demonstrator integrated in a steel plant.
The challenge
Hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron routes avoid much of the carbon associated with conventional steelmaking, but hydrogen-rich reducing gas must be preheated to approximately 800–1000°C. Conventional heating approaches can reintroduce fossil-fuel use or reduce system efficiency.
The SHINE solution
SHINE develops a modular electric resistance heater combining perforated refractory checker bricks and electrified heating elements. The project targets overall efficiency above 95%, industrial reliability, continuous operation and compatibility with hydrogen-rich process gas.
